Daily Market Wrap 30APR07

On the macro level, good inflation and bad consumer spending numbers leave us a bit closer to a possible rate cut, and that could bode well for the falling dollar scenario. However, the series of negative data points surrounding the consumer is beginning to become alarming, because the consumer has made this economy go for the last few years. It looks to me like we are starting to see the consumer pull the plug, so we might have […]

Northwestern Minerals announces further uranium mineralization
April 30, 2007 | 1 Comment
Northwestern Minerals announced this morning that further exploration of its Niger properties had yielded further surface mineralization for uranium with grades in excess of 0.24%. Readers of the blog know that I purchased NWTMF.OB in anticipation of this year’s drilling season, which is just getting underway. Today’s announcement is only a very preliminary piece of exploration data, but in comparison with grades that I’ve seen with other uranium miners, grades in excess of 0.24% compare very well. […]

CVVUF–Junior uranium miner in the Athabasca basin. I’ve already got Purepoint, and I fail to see how CanAlaska has better prospects. They’ve also been less successful with financing than Purepoint.
SNMD.OB–I’m not sure what the heck is going on here. A lot of reorganizing a not much coherency in the business. $17 mill in cash on a $35 mill market cap is pretty attractive, but I am a bit hesitant to believe these numbers. I’ll have […]

Book Review: The Dollar Crisis
April 29, 2007 | Leave a Comment
I’ve just finished reading The Dollar Crisis by Richard Duncan, and felt the book was important enough to write a quick review. This book was originally written in 2002, and Duncan surmised that the dollar was heading for a very big fall that had the potential to undermine the entire international monetary system that today remains based on the dollar standard. His prediction turned out to be quite prescient, as the dollar has fallen some 30-40% against major […]

Let’s start with this morning’s data. Weak GDP indicates a slowing economy, but wages indicate inflationary pressures. However, I view the employment data as having a lag from the general economy, so I believe that as the economy continues to slow we will see a loosening of the labor market. Inflation appears to be less of a concern than previously, and the other inflation we are seeing (in food and energy) is driven by things largely outside […]

Basic Earth selling overdone

Especially in the land of the microcaps, stock pricing can move to extremes. But bad news can be your friend, if it provides a buying opportunity like BSIC. I’ve been following BSIC trend downward for six months now, and I now feel that the stock represents a very attractive risk/reward. Therefore, I purchased a moderate position this morning at $1.41.
The simple fact of the matter is that Basic Earth has gotten absurdly cheap. The stock has […]

A short squeeze brewing at OPBL?
April 27, 2007 | Leave a Comment
Having watched the trade in Optionable yesterday, it appears that we have a major short squeeze brewing in the run up to earnings. There are currently over 3.5 million shares shorted, which amounts to over 20 percent of the float. Based on the 10 day average volume, that represents about 6 days to cover, so we are looking at a lot of potential buyers trying to fit through the door at the same time.
Now, I realize […]

Today was a total short squeeze rally. The shorts just got wiped off the board here. The question now becomes, where to from here? As we continue to move higher, we also continue to discount the risks looming for housing, consumer spending, etc. I don’t think there is a need to take excessive risk here just because the market is going higher.
URME–just when the stock was appearing to show some cracks, it bounces 25%. The […]

Added to URRE position
April 25, 2007 | 1 Comment
This morning I added significantly to my URRE position at $9.96. I’ve been watching the stock trade for the last few days, and there has really been a nice floor under it here. There have been a number of big block trades (read: single blocks worth more than $100k), indicating to me that there is some definite accumulation going on here. URRE is now my largest holding.
I’m also beginning to wonder here if the shorts are finally […]
